The Philadelphia Phillies failed to hit a home run for the first time in 11 games, but it did not matter after an impressive outing by Jake Arrieta.

He pitched seven strong innings and the Phillies scored scattered runs in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings en route to a victory over the New York Mets.

The Phillies have now won five games in a row and 10 of their last 11. They are 19-15 on the season.

  • Arrieta ran into some trouble in the first inning, allowing a leadoff base hit to Brandon Nimmo followed by a walk to Michael Conforto. But he retired the side with no further damage, keeping it scoreless after one.
  • The Phillies got on the board first in the second inning. After Jean Segura walked and stole second, Jay Bruce looped a single into centerfield to make it 1-0.

  • The Mets got a leadoff baserunner in the third inning in Andres Gimenez, but Arrieta picked him off before retiring the side.

  • Meanwhile, Porcello settled down, throwing three consecutive 1-2-3 innings after allowing runs in the second and third.

Jay Bruce was walked to load the bases, and Adam Haseley was hit by a pitch to extend the lead to 5-2.
  • The Mets struck back in the bottom of the eighth. Brandon Nimmo walked to begin the inning, and J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith hit back-to-back singles to make it 5-3. Tommy Hunter entered the game and retired the side to end the inning.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

Rick Porcello:

6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 100 pitches

The Phillies ran Porcello’s pitch count up in the early going, but he settled down to have one of his better starts of an otherwise tough 2020.

Jake Arrieta: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Arrieta was coming off the shortest start of his career, and he bounced back to have a solid start.

Phillies Nuggets Player of the Game: Jake Arrieta

Outside of Conforto’s home run, Arrieta kept the Mets off the board and did a good job of working out of jams when baserunners did get on. He went seven innings for the first time since May 25, 2019 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
