The Phillies bullpen blew another late lead on Tuesday night as they were swept in a doubleheader against the division rival Washington Nationals.

The Phillies offense made an impressive comeback in the late innings, but it did not matter. They even took the lead in the eighth inning, but eventually went on to lose.

Now 27-29 on the season, the Phillies have dropped four straight and sit on the outside looking in at the final wild card spot in the National League. They have just four games remaining on the season, and their odds of making the postseason appear small.

Top Plays

  • The Phillies struck first in the second inning. After Didi Gregorius led off the inning with a double, Andrew Knapp knocked him in with a single to right field.
  • Knapp scored from second on a Roman Quinn base hit, and the Phillies extended their lead to 2-0.
  • The Nationals took the lead in the third inning when David Phelps entered the game. First, Michael Taylor doubled and scored on a single by Andrew Stevenson. Then, after JoJo Romero came in to replace Phelps, Juan Soto blasted a three-run home run that gave the Nationals a 4-2 lead.
  • The Phillies got one back in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Scott Kingery.
  • The Nationals got two back in the bottom of the fourth. Eric Thames walked to lead off the inning and then scored on a double by Yadiel Hernandez. Then, after Tommy Hunter relieved Romero, Andrew Stevenson tripled to score Hernandez.
  • The Phillies got both runs back in the next inning. After Andrew McCutchen and Alec Bohm both reached base, Didi Gregorius drove them in with a double to cut the Nationals lead to 6-5.
  • The Phillies tied things up in the top of the sixth. After they loaded the bases with two outs, J.T. Realmuto hit an infield single to score Roman Quinn from third.
  • Hector Neris pitched two scoreless innings to send the game to extras.
  • The Phillies scored one in the eighth, when Brock Holt airmailed a throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Roman Quinn.
  • The Nationals won the game in the eighth on a walk-off home run by Yadiel Hernandez against Brandon Workman.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

David Hale: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR, 11 pitches

Hale allowed one baserunner but pitched an otherwise clean first inning. But, the rest of the bullpen failed to follow suit. Phelps and Romero allowed a combined six earned runs in just 2/3 innings pitched.

Paolo Espino: 4 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 66 pitches

Espino made his first major league appearance since 2017, and overall limited the Phillies damage to just three runs in four innings pitched.

Phillies Nuggets Player of the Game: Yadiel Hernandez

Hernandez, who is a 32-year-old rookie for the Nationals, hit the home run that sunk the Phillies in this one. It was the first home run of Hernandez’s young major league career.
