Kim Batiste,’93 NLCS hero, dies at age 52
Former Phillies infielder Kim Batiste, who is best known for knocking in the game-winning run in the tenth inning of Game 1 of the 1993 NLCS, died Wednesday at 52.
His family said Batiste passed away due to complications from an emergency kidney surgery, per Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Batiste was drafted by the Phillies in the third round of the 1987 MLB draft. He made his debut for the club in 1991 and played four seasons in Philadelphia. He was released by the Phillies in May 1995, signed with the Baltimore Orioles a month later and was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the Rule 5 draft later that year.
In his first career postseason appearance, Batiste replaced Dave Hollins at third base in Game 1 of the 1993 NLCS. He threw a potential double-play ball into right field, which eventually led to the visiting Atlanta Braves tying the game at three.
With John Kruk on second base with one out in the bottom of the tenth, Batiste lined a base hit to left field to win the game for the Phillies at Veterans Stadium.
