My First Phillies Game – Randolph

I do remember my first Phillies game, I was in 6th grade, and was a member of the “Safety Patrol”, and the school took all the Safety Patrol members to the Phillies game via a school bus.

This was probably around 1967 or 1968, and the Phillies played the St. Louis Cardinals at Connie Mack Stadium. Roger Maris was playing for the Cardinals at that time, although he was past his prime.

We were out in Left Field seats, and it was a nice Saturday afternoon for a game. Unfortunately, the Phillies lost to the Cardinals, but it was such a thrill to attend my first major league baseball game. That was the only game I ever saw at Connie Mack Stadium.

I have lots of Great Memories of games played at the Vet, such as Mike Schmidt Night, seeing Tony Taylor get his 2,000 hit, etc. Plus taking my son, Nick, to see his first Phillies game.

I remember that game also, Phillies played the Expos, and Mike Jackson had a no-hitter going into the 9th inning. I thought, WOW, how great would that be if my son’s first game was a no-hitter. But with one out in the 9th inning, a single broke up the no-hitter. Still a great game.

Thanks for the opportunity to remember these great experiences at Phillies games!
