Former Phillie Tommy Hunter signs with Mets

On Sunday, the New York Mets announced that Tommy Hunter will be heading north from Philadelphia to Queens.

Hunter, who received a minor league deal and a major league spring training invite, will look to bolster a strong Mets bullpen. He posted a 3.64 ERA in 94 appearances over three seasons with the Phillies.

The big right-hander signed a two-year deal with Philadelphia worth $18 million during the 2018 offseason. Hunter was expected to be featured in the back-end of the bullpen coming off his exceptional 2017 season, in which he had a 2.61 ERA with the Tampa Bay Rays.

However, Hunter delivered middling results in his first campaign with the Phillies, posting a 3.80 ERA and 3.63 FIP in 65 appearances. Injuries limited Hunter to just five appearances in 2019, the final year of that initial contract.

After 2019, Hunter re-signed with the Phillies for only $850,000. Though his 4.01 ERA in 24 games was disappointing, his 3.31 FIP suggests he was unlucky in the pandemic-shortened season.

The deal with the Mets is Hunter’s first non-guaranteed contract of his career. Now 34, Hunter will need to prove himself in spring training to have a shot to make the Mets 26-man opening day roster.
