Report: Phillies ‘discussing a contract’ with Brad Miller

The Phillies are in need of a left-handed power bat off the bench that could play multiple infield positions as well as corner outfield.

In comes an old friend.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Phillies are discussing a contract with free-agent Brad Miller.

Miller, 31, was traded to the Phillies from the New York Yankees for cash considerations in June 2019. He slashed .263/.331/.610 with 12 home runs and 21 RBIs in 118 at-bats in 2019. Seven of his 12 home runs came in a nine-day span from Sept. 21 to the 29th. He became the first Phillie to ever have three multi-home run games in nine days.

The Phillies opted not to re-sign Miller heading into the 2020 season. He signed a one-year/$2 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals instead, which turned out to a great deal for both sides. Miller spent the majority of his time in St. Louis as a DH hitting in the fourth spot. He slashed .232/.357/.451 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in 142 at-bats.

If a deal between Miller and the Phillies comes to fruition, expect Miller to be the go-to bat off the bench in key spots. While the Phillies don’t seem too concerned about Andrew McCutchen’s ability to play a full season in left field, Miller could be tapped to make spot starts at that position, especially if the DH does not return to the National League in 2021. Along with Scott Kingery, Miller could also serve in a super-utility role.

He could be the Swiss Army knife of the Phillies offense.

In any case, prepare to stock up on bamboo like it’s toilet paper.
