The definitive Didi Gregorius tweet emoji guide

Didi Gregorius is in his second season with the Phillies. (John Adams/Icon Sportswire)

When the Philadelphia Phillies signed Didi Gregorius as a free agent, they certainly weren’t acquiring him for his presence on social media. But while Gregorius has been a hit for the Phillies on the field – slashing .267/.317/.450 since 2020 – he has also been a hit on Twitter.

After nearly every Phillies victory, fans can expect a tweet from Gregorius, detailing the highlights of the game using a wide variety of emojis to display the names of Phillies players.

Deciphering these tweets can be difficult for the untrained eye. Here is your key to understanding all of Gregorius’ future tweets:

J.T. Realmuto –

This emoji is labeled by Twitter as “Mechanical leg.” Presumably, Gregorius sees this as a catcher’s leg, which is why he uses it for Realmuto.

Rhys Hoskins –

Though they may not be identical, Twitter’s “Person, curly hair” emoji looks similar to Hoskins.

Jean Segura –

Twitter labels this emoji as “Deaf person”. Perhaps Segura talks too much and doesn’t listen or maybe this is an inside joke between Gregorius and Segura.

Alec Bohm –

Bohm is 6-foot-5. Gregorius is comparing his height to a giraffe.

Andrew McCutchen –

McCutchen is known as one of the more outgoing players in baseball. Perhaps the astronaut represents his confidence and outgoing style, or maybe Gregorius just thinks it looks cool.

Adam Haseley –

Adam Haseley might not talk much. That’s why Gregorius uses the emoji called “Zipper-mouth face.”

Bryce Harper –

Twitter calls this emoji “Person in tuxedo”. Harper is a well-dressed guy. Gregorius clearly sees the connection between the two.

Andrew Knapp –

Gregorius uses “Man teacher” for Knapp, perhaps because of his wisdom. Knapp was voted most likely to win Jeopardy by his teammates in 2020.

Brad Miller –

After a game-tying monster home run against the New York Mets in 2019, Miller looked into the dugout and stuck out his tongue.

Roman Quinn –

Quinn may be the fastest player in all of baseball. So naturally, Gregorius chose the “Running man” emoji.

Odubel Herrera –

Herrera goes by the nick name “El Torito,” which in Spanish means little bull.

Aaron Nola –

Gregorius might use this emoji because Aaron Nola keeps to himself. Or maybe Nola owns a trench coat.

Zack Wheeler –

Gregorius uses the “Flying saucer” emoji for Wheeler. Presumably, Gregorius just thinks that Wheeler is too good to be human.

Zach Eflin –

Zach Eflin is 6-foot-6. Like Bohm, Gregorius uses a large animal to represent a tall player.

Chase Anderson –

It took Gregorius almost nine full months after his first game with the Phillies before using “Person shrugging” to represent Anderson. Maybe Didi has finally run out of emojis.

Vince Velasquez –

Velasquez is from Montclair, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Perhaps Velasquez enjoys surfing or Gregorius just thinks Velasquez gives off California vibes.

Matt Moore –

Twitter calls this emoji “Person in steamy room”. Maybe Moore likes to hit the sauna.

Jose Alvarado –

Gregorius uses a pudgy-looking “Bear face” to represent José Alvarado. The hard-throwing lefty did estimate that he lost 50 pounds this past offseason.

Connor Brogdon –

“Man scientist” is the emoji Gregorius chose to represent Brogdon. Perhaps Brogdon is interested in analytics.

Sam Coonrod –

Sam Coonrod could be a gym rat or maybe he’s very strong.

Archie Bradley –

Archie Bradley gets excited easily, maybe he talks a lot. Twitter doesn’t have a name for this emoji.

Brandon Kintzler –

At age 36, Brandon Kintzler is the oldest player on the team. Gregorius uses the “Man, white haired” emoji for him.

Enyel De Los Santos –

Just like a traffic guard wears a “Safety vest” and controls traffic on the street, De Los Santos controls traffic on the bases.

David Hale –

Twitter lists this image as a comet. Why Gregorius uses a comet for a pitcher whose fastball tops out at 95 mph is unclear.

Jojo Romero –

This emoji is called “Man supervillain”. Romero is well known for his Redbull-related crimes.

Hector Neris –

Gregorius uses the “Jack-o-lantern” for Neris. Gregorius might think that Neris is spooky-good.
