Aaron Nola punched out Jesse Winker in the fifth inning of the Phillies’ Tuesday night matchup against the Cincinnati Reds. It was a big strikeout in the game as Nola stranded the tying run at second. From a personal standpoint, it was a milestone K, as Nola recorded the 1,000th strikeout of his MLB career.

Nola, as Phillies fans know, has had an up-and-down start to his season. However, one thing that’s remained relatively consistent has been his ability to rack up the strikeouts; he’s compiled at least nine K/9 in each of his five full seasons, and that number has been in the double digits twice.

Per the Phillies, Nola is the ninth pitcher in the franchise’s history to reach 1,000 strikeouts and the first since Cole Hamels surpassed that mark in 2011. He’s only the third Phillies pitcher to reach 1,000 strikeouts with the team before age 28 (Hamels: 27 years, 174 days; Steve Carlton: 27 years, 137 days).

Next on the all-time Phillies leaderboard is Curt Simmons at 1,052. Barring injury, Nola will likely top that number this season to move into eighth all-time as a Phillie.
