The Philadelphia Phillies will be without their top hitter against future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw Wednesday, and for the foreseeable future.

Jean Segura left Tuesday evening’s loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers with two outs in the ninth inning after reaching on an error by Albert Pujols. Following the game, Joe Girardi said that Segura injured his left groin, and he believed that this would be an injury that took more than a day or two to recover from.

Indeed, the Phillies have placed Segura on the 10-day injured list, and recalled Nick Maton from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies general manager Sam Fuld said that Segura has a Grade-1 groin strain, with the expectation being that he’ll miss “about three weeks,” according to Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer

.

Girardi told the collective media Wednesday evening – including Matt Gelb of The Athletic – that Maton is in Los Angeles with the Phillies, so he’ll be available tonight.

It’s a pretty difficult loss for the Phillies, as Segura has played as well in 2021 as any season in his career. The two-time All-Star is slashing .332/.379/.465 in his third seasons with the Phillies, and has four defensive runs saved at second base.

In Segura’s absence, the Phillies have a few options to play second base, with Gelb noting that Ronald Torreyes is expected to get a bulk of the starts at shortstop. Maton, Luke Williams and Brad Miller could all play second base.
