J.T. Realmuto leaves Sunday’s game with injury

J.T. Realmuto batted second and played first base for the Phillies on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk, but was lifted from the game in the top of the sixth with left ankle soreness.

Like many lineup regulars near the end of August, Realmuto is dealing with some nagging injuries. The 30-year-old is playing with some shoulder soreness. The injury was downplayed by both Realmuto and manager Joe Girardi.

The Phillies are short on catching options. Backup Andrew Knapp is on the injured list after testing positive for COVID-19. He’ll be out for at least 10 days. Knapp, Realmuto and Rafael Marchan are the only catchers on the Phillies’ 40-man roster.

Brad Miller entered the game to play first base for Realmuto.

Update: Joe Girardi said after the game that Realmuto rolled his ankle on a swing during his last at-bat. He is considered day-to-day. Nick Maton and Ronald Torreyes were the emergency backup catchers.
