Rhys Hoskins out for the 2021 season with surgery looming

When Rhys Hoskins played in 2021, it was arguably the most productive season of his major league career. But for the second consecutive season, the slugger will end the year unavailable to the Philadelphia Phillies as they attempt to end a lengthy postseason drought.

Hoskins told the collective media, including Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia, that he won’t play again this season. While he had been dealing with a left groin strain, the 28-year-old will have season-ending surgery to repair an abdominal issue.

The first baseman did have a brief return from the injured list, and managed to hit three home runs in eight at-bats. However, he had two key defensive miscues Wednesday, and presumably wasn’t going to be able to run at full speed for the remainder of the season. The Phillies placed Hoskins back on the injured list Thursday.

Hoskins will finish his fourth full major league season having slashed .247/.334/.530 with 27 home runs, 71 RBIs, 47 walks and an .864 OPS.

The Scott Boras client can’t become a free agent until after the 2023 season.
