Watch: Aaron and Austin Nola face off for first time
One of the most notable at-bats of the season happened in the bottom of the second of Saturday’s game against San Diego.
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola, 28, faced his older brother Austin Nola, 31, for the first time in the big leagues. The two never faced each other in the minors. The pair’s last formal meeting on the diamond came in an intrasquad game at Louisiana State University.
Aaron actually had a much more competitive at-bat in the last half inning. He went with three fastballs at 95.2, 95.9 and 96.2-mph to get Austin swinging on strikes easily. The older Nola brother even called timeout after the first two pitches to throw his little brother off.
The latter two pitches of the at-bat are the hardest fastballs Aaron has thrown all year. The last fastball was the third-hardest fastball of his career.
Staci and A.J. Nola, the parents of Aaron and Austin, are among the group of Nolas in attendance in San Diego. We can’t confirm if either of them have a favorite son or not.
