Former Phillie Jake Arrieta designated for assignment by Padres

Former Philadelphia Phillies starter Jake Arrieta was designated for assignment by the San Diego Padres Tuesday, leaving you to wonder if he’ll ever pitch at the major league level again.

In four starts with the Padres, the 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner went 0-3 with a 10.95 ERA.

This marks the second failed stint for Arrieta in 2021, as he was released by the Chicago Cubs — the team he helped to snap a 108-year World Series drought in 2016 — in August. In 24 starts between the Cubs and Padres this season, Arrieta has a 7.39 ERA and 6.16 FIP.

The disastrous campaign for Arrieta comes after he posted a 4.36 ERA and 4.55 FIP in three seasons with the Phillies, who he signed a three-year/$75 million free-agent deal with in March of 2018.

Ironically, Arrieta’s former Phillies teammate, Vince Velasquez, will make his second start for the Padres this evening against the San Francisco Giants. The 29-year-old allowed four hits and four earned runs across four innings in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals last Friday. The Padres, decimated by injuries to their starting rotation, have gone just 23-34 since the All-Star Break.
