Minor-league week in review: Alec Bohm heats up ahead of final series

In a season filled with struggle and disappointment for Alec Bohm, the runner-up in last year’s National League Rookie of the Year voting has found some late success near the end of the minor-league season.

The 25-year-old put together a productive series in which he hit his first Triple-A home run last week, despite his Lehigh Valley IronPigs dropping four of five games against the Buffalo Bisons at Sahlen Field.

The IronPigs fell to 53-70 on the season with one series remaining. They’ll take on the visiting Worcester Red Sox for five games starting Wednesday at Coca-Cola Park, closing their season on Sunday afternoon.

Bohm went 0-for-4 as Lehigh Valley won its first game of the series in Buffalo 3-0 last Wednesday, but he started rolling at the plate from there in four consecutive losing efforts. He picked up a hit on Thursday to start a quick four-game hitting streak.

Friday, Bohm went 1-for-4 with a double and a sacrifice fly. He followed that with a 3-for-5 performance as he singled, doubled and homered for the first time as an IronPig. He capped the series with a two-hit day, hitting a single and a double. In five games, Bohm went 7-for-23 with four extra-base hits and a sac fly while splitting time between third base and first base.

Bohm had previously struggled in three games against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the series prior as he returned to the lineup on Sept. 17 from a hand injury he suffered against the same team on Aug. 29. He was sent to Lehigh Valley at the start of that last series in August. Bohm is hitting .268/.354/.411 with a home run and five doubles in 14 games since then.

His demotion stemmed from a lackluster sophomore season with the Phillies in comparison to his stellar rookie campaign. He batted .338 in 44 games in the majors last season, but slashed just .245/.302/.342 in 111 games with 16 fielding errors in 2021.
