Phillies offense goes quiet in Game 161

Final Score: Marlins 3, Phillies 1

One game remains. The Philadelphia Phillies dropped the second to last game of the season in Miami. Outside of the first game of this series, the Phillies offense has struggled mightily in the past week. It’s no secret that the Marlins have been the Phillies’ kryptonite in recent years. The season series between the two teams is now tied.

Despite collecting more hits than Miami, the Phillies were not able to capitalize on opportunities. J.T. Realmuto was the only Phillies starter without a hit with the exception of Hans Crouse. Philadelphia’s 2-5 hitters had ten combined strikeouts. Matt Vierling continued his impressive rookie campaign with a two-out RBI single in the top of the fifth but nothing else came of that rally.

Three runs was all that the Marlins needed. In the third inning, Crouse worked around the opposing pitcher Jesús Luzardo for a walk and surrendered a single to Miguel Rojas. Jazz Chisholm took advantage and broke the 0-0 tie in the third inning with a three-run blast to put the Fish on top for good. Hopefully, this is not the making of the next Phillies killer.

Cristopher Sanchez kept the Marlins in check for three innings and Kyle Dohy pitched a scoreless frame in his MLB debut, but the damage had been done. Luzardo had no problems pitching with the lead before handing it off to the Marlins bullpen. They kept it at 3-1 from the sixth inning on as Dylan Floro closed it out. Tomorrow afternoon, the Phillies will close out the season looking to avoid 80 losses.

Hans Crouse: 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 72 pitches

In his second career start, Crouse tossed two scoreless frames before running into some trouble in the third inning. He has shown some flashes to build upon for next season, but his command isn’t quite there yet. The hope is that Crouse will develop into a future starter as he is one of the top arms in the Phillies minor league system.

Jesús Luzardo: 5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 11 SO, 87 pitches

Luzardo kept the Phillies quiet in his last outing of the season. An all too familiar theme of this Phillies season has been the occasional lifeless offense. Today was one of those days and Luzardo made quick work of the lineup while he was on the mound. Outside of a jam in the fifth, he cruised with 11 total strikeouts.

Phillies Nugget Of The Game

Vierling has gone 17-for-47 (.362) with five RBIs in his first 15 career starts.

1 Word describes phils. INEPT! Should be NL East champions. But inept bullpen could not win 25% of blown save games. Inept hitters quit on each other. LOSERDELPHIA!
