Aaron Nola is now the longest-tenured Phillie
With reliever Héctor Neris set to depart for Houston, Aaron Nola is now the longest-tenured player on the Philadelphia Phillies roster.
The former first-round pick made his major league debut on July 21, 2015. Nola has a 67-49 record in seven seasons with the Phillies, along with a 3.68 ERA and 3.42 FIP. Since the start of the 2015 season, Nola’s 23.7 fWAR is ninth among all starting pitchers. The 28-year-old is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract, though it would be shocking if the Phillies didn’t exercise their $16 million club option on Nola for 2023.
With Neris and Odúbel Herrera no longer in the organization, Nola is the only remaining Phillie who was teammates with franchise icons Cole Hamels and Chase Utley. Granted, Hamels was traded to the Texas Rangers 10 days after Nola debuted with the Phillies. Utley was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers less than a month after Nola first appeared at the major league level.
Nola is one of just two players on the 40-man roster that shared a clubhouse with another future Phillies Wall of Famer: Carlos Ruiz. The other is Zach Eflin. Roman Quinn — currently recovering from an achilles tear — made his major league debut in September of 2016, meaning Ruiz had been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers by the time he was on the Phillies. With that said, Quinn, Nola and Eflin were all teammates with former National League MVP Ryan Howard, who wrapped up his 13-year career at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
Ruiz — who made his major league debut on May 6, 2006 — is the most recent player to reach 10 years of service time with the Phillies.
