Another week, another waiver claim for a left-handed pitcher by the Phillies.

The team announced Wednesday that they claimed starter Scott Moss, who was previously designated for assignment by the Cleveland Guardians.

The Phillies claimed lefty reliever Kent Emmanuel off waivers from the Houston Astros last Friday, also adding minor leaguers Jhailyn Ortiz, James McArthur and Luis García to the 40-man roster. They also traded for Yankees reliever Nick Nelson and minor-league catcher Donny Sands that day, as well as Astros catcher Garrett Stubbs.

Moss, the latest roster addition, struggled in just nine Triple-A appearances in 2021, but has found success throughout his career as a minor-league starter. In five minor-league seasons, he has a 3.45 ERA in 94 starts and 96 appearances.

The 27-year-old joined the Cleveland organization midway through the 2019 season in a trade that sent Trevor Bauer to Cincinnati. Moss had been drafted by the Reds in the fourth round of the 2016 draft.

With the addition of Moss, the Phillies’ 40-man roster is currently at capacity, but the team could still continue to make moves around the edges throughout the offseason.
