The story behind Bryce Harper’s NL MVP cleats is great

Under Armour revealed a new pair of cleats to commemorate Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper winning the 2021 National League MVP Award, and the story behind them is pretty incredible.

During the 2019 season — Harper’s first in Philadelphia — he met with the Camden Pirates at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Under Armour says that after the New Jersey youth baseball team had their concession stand robbed, Harper gave each player on the team a pair of his “Harper 4” cleats and a signed baseball.

A few years later, the players that Harper met with teamed up with Under Armour to design the “Harper 6” MVP cleats:

In his third season with the Phillies, Harper slashed .309/.429/.615 with 35 home runs, 84 RBIs, 100 walks, a 1.044 OPS and a 6.6 fWAR. Harper edged out Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. to win the NL MVP.

By winning his second NL MVP Award, Harper joined just 31 other players in MLB history who have won multiple league MVP Awards.
