With major award looming, Gabe Kapler receives contract extension from Giants
Days before he likely wins the National League Manager of the Year Award, former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler has received a contract extension from the San Francisco Giants.
For Kapler, it’s a two-year extension through 2024 the team says. Kapler had one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed when he was hired to be successor to future Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy.
After being fired by the Phillies ahead of the third and final year of his contract, Kapler was hired by Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, with whom he had previously worked with in the front office of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Kapler fizzled out in his first managerial stint, but has had overwhelming success in his second stop. The Giants seemingly overachieved in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 29-31, a game better than a more talented Phillies roster. In Kapler’s second season in San Francisco, the Giants led baseball with 107 wins before ultimately falling to the Dodgers in a tremendous NLDS.
Now 46, Kapler has a 297-249 cumulative record in four seasons as a manager.
