The Phillies have signed former Red Sox first base prospect Josh Ockimey to a minor-league deal, according to Ockimey himself on Twitter.

Ockimey, 26, was born in Philadelphia and was drafted in the fifth round by the Red Sox in 2014 out of Neumann-Goretti Catholic High School. He spent all of 2021 in Triple A with the WooSox, where he slashed .225/.338/.416 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs.

Ockimey is a left-handed bat with pop. The first baseman hit a combined 40 home runs and drew 144 walks in Triple A since 2019.

As Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted, Ockimey could serve as first-base depth behind Rhys Hoskins. Ockimey and Hoskins were both drafted in the same round, with Hoskins going 22 spots ahead of Ockimey.

Ockimey grew up a Phillies fan. According to Mass Live, Ockimey was invited to work as an instructor at a local baseball camp Cole Hamels hosted in 2019.

The Phillies recently signed Ockimey’s 2021 WooSox teammate Yairo Muñoz to a minor-league contract.
