Roman Quinn reportedly signs with NL East rival

A familiar face has a new home.

Former Phillies outfielder Roman Quinn has signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins, according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald. The deal includes an invite to big league spring training.

Quinn was designated for assignment by the Phillies in November.

As Mish previously reported, the Marlins do have interest in acquiring Pirates center fielder Bryan Reynolds. In the event that Miami is unable to land the star center fielder, Quinn could spend time at the position for the Marlins.

Quinn, 28, is recovering from a left Achilles injury suffered in a game last May against the Tampa Bay Rays. The expected recovery timeline given was nine to 12 months, so it’s possible that Quinn could be ready for the start of the season. Quinn told Phillies Nation’s Tim Kelly that he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds five months after surgery, which is frankly incredible.

The Florida native was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the 2011 draft. He was ranked as high as No. 2 on the Baseball America Phillies top prospects lists. In five seasons with the Phillies, Quinn slashed .228/.306/.355 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs. For years, Quinn has been battling injury after injury. The hope here is that good health awaits him in Miami.

“I had people in my corner in my wife and my family. And my faith was just bigger than baseball,” Quinn said earlier this offseason. “There’s a lot of people in my neighborhood that look up to me — a lot of kids that look up to me. So I did whatever I could to put myself in a position to come back and play this year. And I feel really well. I feel close to 100%. I’m back running like I was before, which is good.”
