Former Phillie Andrew Knapp to sign with the Pirates

Former Phillies catcher Andrew Knapp will sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates and be the team’s backup catcher, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Roberto Perez is likely to be the Pirates’ starting catcher.

Knapp, 30, was in camp with the Cincinnati Reds this spring on a minor league deal. He exercised the opt out in his contract and found a landing spot in Pittsburgh.

Knapp, a former Phillies second-round pick in 2013, spent five seasons as the team’s backup catcher where he slashed .214/.314/.322 with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs.

The Phillies sought an upgrade at backup catcher this offseason and outrighted Andrew Knapp off the 40-man roster back in November. They traded for both Donny Sands and Garrett Stubbs and held a camp competition for the backup spot behind J.T. Realmuto with Stubbs coming out on top.

Sands was optioned to minor league camp. If he’s still on the Phillies’ 40-man roster by the time rosters are due at 12 p.m. ET. Thursday, he’ll likely be the IronPig’s starting catcher with Rafael Marchan currently dealing with an injury.
