Final Score: Phillies 12, Dodgers 10

It took two save attempts — neither of which were especially clean — but the Philadelphia Phillies held on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 innings Friday, powered by another big game from reigning National League MVP Bryce Harper.

The Phillies struck first in the top of the second inning, as Bryson Stott kicked off the scoring by hitting a two-run single to left field, scoring Rhys Hoskins and Odubel Herrera.

After cruising through the first two innings, Kyle Gibson ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third. Gibson gave up a leadoff homer to Chris Taylor, an RBI double to Mookie Betts and a two-out, two-run double to Justin Turner. The Dodgers put up a five-spot in the bottom of the third inning, erasing an early 2-0 lead for the Phillies.

The Phillies struck back in the next inning, as Stott came through again and knocked in Herrera with an RBI single. Later in the top of the fourth inning, Schwarber hit a tremendous two-run home run, with the ball traveling 430 feet to even the game at five:

Austin Barnes would quickly give the Dodgers the lead back with an RBI single in the home half of the fourth inning.

The Phillies would retake the lead by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sandwiched in between a sacrifice fly by Bohm and an RBI single for Castellanos was a double into the corner by Harper, scoring one of the aforementioned three runs:

In the top of the eighth inning, Harper added what was seemingly an insurance run by homering to right field to extend the lead to 9-7:

Jeurys Familia blew the save in the bottom of the ninth inning when he gave up a two-run home run to Turner — that would be Justin, not Trea. He was able to get two more outs to extend the game into extra innings.

The Dodgers intentionally walked Harper in the top of the 10th inning followed by a two-run double down the left field line by Castellanos. Castellanos later scored on a throwing error by Barnes, giving the Phillies a 12-9 lead:

Francisco Morales was summoned to close the door against the resilient Dodgers in the bottom of the 10th inning. Morales walked two Dodgers in a row to load the bases and then got two outs on a double-play ball off the bat of Betts. While Betts’ double play did score a run, Morales would induce a game-ending groundout a batter later, putting an end to a game that lasted over four hours.

With the win, the Phillies improve to 16-17. Ranger Suárez will get the ball Saturday evening, as the Phillies look to clinch a series win over the Dodgers.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

Kyle Gibson: 3 2/3 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 69 pitches

Gibson cruised through the first two innings, but a five-run third inning by the Dodgers and a shaky fourth chased him off the mound after 3 2/3 innings. Fortunately, the Phillies provided him with enough run support to avoid a loss. The Phillies, however, had to use six relievers due to Gibson’s disappointing start.

Walker Buehler: 5 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 82 pitches

The Phillies hit Buehler around and scored five runs on the Dodgers ace in the first four innings. When Buehler got hit, he got hit hard, as three of the nine hits he gave up were for extra bases, one of which was the Schwarber home run in the fourth inning.
