Two home runs from slugging first baseman Pete Alonso was all the New York Mets needed to take Game 2 of the Mother’s Day doubleheader against the Phillies, who are now 12-16.
Both home runs came with two outs and runners on base. The first was against Phillies opener Cristopher Sánchez and gave the Mets a 2-0 lead in the first.
In the fifth, Alonso got a 2-0 fastball right down the middle of the plate against Nick Nelson and drilled it into the left-field seats to put the Mets on top 5-1.
Joe Girardi may have tried to get too much out of Nelson, who allowed the first three batters he faced in his third inning of work to reach base safely. The Phillies manager confirmed after the game that the plan was to get five innings out of both Sánchez and Nelson.
“I felt pretty good about [Nelson] still,” Girardi said. “There’s a situation, he gets behind 2-0 and he just made a bad pitch.”
The Phillies did have multiple chances with runners in scoring position early on but failed to capitalize. Rhys Hoskins had second and third with two outs in the first, but struck out to end the inning. Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and Hoskins all had a chance to drive in a run after both Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm reached base to begin the third inning. Harper struck out, Castellanos lined out and Hoskins hit a pop up to end the inning.
Hoskins in particular is in another lengthy slump. He doubled in his third at-bat, but it was only his second hit of the homestand. Hoskins is batting .189 with a .639 OPS so far this season.
Jean Segura did hit his 100th career home run in the second inning against Chris Bassitt. Per the Phillies, he joins Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, Charlie Blackmon and Starling Marte as the only active players with at least 100 home runs, 225 doubles and 45 triples.
The Phillies will hop on a plane to Seattle following Sunday’s game for the start of a seven-game west coast roadtrip on Monday. Ranger Suárez will pitch against Chris Flexen.

Chris Bassitt: 5 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 101 pitches
Segura’s home run was the only blemish on Bassitt’s line on Sunday. The Phillies worked up Bassitt’s pitch count early, but he was able to settle in and be more efficient as the outing moved along. The former A’s pitcher has a 2.45 ERA in six starts in 2022.
Cristopher Sánchez: 2 1/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 51 pitches
Sánchez was recalled from Lehigh Valley earlier on Sunday to serve as both the Phillies’ 27th man and the Phillies opener in what was a scheduled bullpen game. His two runs allowed came on Alonso’s first-inning home run. Sánchez has a 5.84 ERA in 12 1/3 innings pitched in the big leagues so far this season.
