Final Score: Mets 10, Phillies 6

Kyle Schwarber took Max Scherzer deep twice, but it wasn’t enough for the Philadelphia Phillies to pull out a a victory on Sunday Night Baseball over the New York Mets.

After the first five batters were struck out by Scherzer, Schwarber hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead:

In the bottom of the inning, however, Eflin gave up back-to-back singles to Eduardo Escobar and Dominic Smith, followed by an RBI groundout by Starling Marte and a run-scoring double to Luis Guillorme, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead:

J.T. Realmuto walked with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and Schwarber promptly belted a changeup for a two-run home run that put the Phillies back up 3-2:

In the bottom of the inning, the Phillies again couldn’t pitch a clean inning, as Eflin allowed another single to Escobar and an RBI double to Smith to tie the game at 3-3.

Eflin gave up a single to Francisco Lindor and a double to Jeff McNeil in the bottom of the fifth inning, before an intentional walk to Pete Alonso. Joe Girardi then pulled Eflin with the bases loaded and one out in favor of José Alvarado. Between a passed ball off the glove of Realmuto on a cross up and a two-run single by Smith, the Mets increased their lead to 6-3.

The Phillies did get a run back in the top of the sixth inning with one out, as Bryce Harper hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season:

Jean Segura committed an error at second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing Lindor to reach base safely and two subsequent singles scored him. A pitching change didn’t stop the bleeding, as Cristopher Sánchez gave up a single that scored two Mets. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Mets added on a run to make it a 10-4 game.

While Johan Camargo did hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, it wasn’t enough as the Phillies fell to the Mets, losing the series and dropping to 11-12 on the season.

They’ll be off Monday before opening a quick two-game set with the Texas Rangers at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

Zach Eflin: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 85 pitches

Eflin couldn’t get a shutdown inning after the Phillies had scored all night. Although he kept the ball in the ballpark, Eflin let strings of singles and doubles come back to haunt him.

Max Scherzer: 6.0 IP, 5H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 94 pitches

Scherzer was on early tonight, but Schwarber has proven to be a certified Mets killer. Three of the four runs the Phillies scored came from the bat of Schwarber, but the rest of the lineup didn’t do much.
