FINAL: Blue Jays 4, Phillies 3

Right-hander José Berríos brought his swing-and-miss stuff on Tuesday night as the Blue Jays outlasted a Philadelphia Phillies bullpen game 4-3 at the Rogers Centre.

Missing starters J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm — the latter of whom also injured his finger on Monday — due to vaccine requirements in Canada, the Phillies lineup struck out 13 times against Berríos.

A collection of six Phillies pitchers put together a serviceable showing in Toronto, but a sixth-inning RBI double from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ultimately made the difference.

After the Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Teoscar Hernández double, Philadelphia did tie the game behind second-inning RBI single by Odúbel Herrera and a Bryson Stott home run in the fourth.

A Matt Chapman RBI double put Toronto back ahead in the bottom of the inning, before a Nick Castellanos single tied it back up for the Phillies in the fifth.

Once Gurriel gave the Blue Jays the late lead, the Phillies could not get another run across, making it the team’s fourth straight game scoring three runs or fewer.

  • Taking the mound first in a bullpen game, it was a less than ideal start for Andrew Bellatti. He allowed two runs in his one inning of work on the Hernández double.
  • The Toronto starter Berríos has struggled so far this season, but certainly missed bats on Tuesday. He allowed three runs over six innings.
