Final Score: Phillies 2, Marlins 1
MIAMI — For most of the evening Friday, it appeared that one run of support was all that National League Cy Young Award-favorite Sandy Alcántara was going to need to hand the Philadelphia Phillies their fifth consecutive loss.
Make no mistake, the Phillies didn’t break out of their offensive funk against the Miami Marlins’ ace — far from it, really. But the Phillies countered excellent pitching from Alcántara with some of their own, and got just enough timely hitting to steal a series-opening victory.

Darick Hall delivered the game-tying double off of Alcántara in the top of the seventh inning, plating Rhys Hoskins on a ball that would have been an opposite-field home run in eight ballparks:
Third base coach Dusty Wathan appeared caught in between whether he wanted to wave Nick Castellanos home or not, but ultimately put up the stop sign. Castellanos didn’t stop, and was thrown out at home plate.
Despite that, the Phillies still took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, with Realmuto trading places with Hall, giving the Phillies the lead against his former employer:
Alcántara was the most impressive pitcher on the field at loanDepot Park, but Phillies pitching more than held their own, as Kyle Gibson, José Alvarado, Brad Hand and Seranthony Domínguez combined to limit the Marlins to just four hits and one run, while striking out 10.
Domínguez walked the bases loaded in the ninth inning, but ultimately induced a groundout off the bat of Jesús Sánchez, which Bryson Stott fired home for the second out. Phillie killer Miguel Rojas had a chance to tie or even win the game with two outs, but Domínguez struck him out to end the game, sealing a victory for the Phillies.
With the win, the Phillies improve to 47-43, climbing back above the .500 mark on the road (23-22). The Marlins missed an opportunity to close the gap between themselves and the Phillies Friday, instead falling to 43-46.
Things appear to be trending towards Ranger Suárez coming off the injured list and getting the start Saturday afternoon at loanDepot Park for the Phillies. Meanwhile, Max Meyer — the No. 21 prospect in baseball — is slated to make his Major League Debut for the Fish.

- Kyle Gibson turned in one of his best starts of the season in the series opener in Miami, limiting the Marlins to four hits and one run over six innings. On the season, the 34-year-old now has a 4.35 ERA.
- Sandy Alcántara took the loss Friday night, despite striking out 12 batters over eight innings. An All-Star for the second time in his career, Alcántara allowed four hits and two runs in his 19th start of the 2022 campaign. The 26-year-old leads baseball with 138 1/3 innings pitched, 20 more than the next closest in Aaron Nola.
