The Boston Red Sox are signing former Phillies reliever Jeurys Familia, according to Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. He’ll join the Triple-A Worcester WooSox.
Familia, 32, signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Phillies in the offseason. He compiled a 6.09 ERA in 38 games with the Phillies and was designated for assignment to make room for new trade acquisition David Robertson on the roster on Aug 2. He was officially released on Aug. 6.
Dave Dombrowski said in April that the Phillies believed they could fix some parts of Familia’s delivery to get him back on track. Based on results, it seemed like the problems with Familia ran deeper than mechanics in his delivery.
This is the not the first time the Red Sox have picked up a former Phillies pitcher while his value was at a low point. They have turned Nick Pivetta into a serviceable big league starter. Austin Davis appeared in a postseason game for Boston. Even the recently released Yacksel RÃos posted a 3.70 ERA in 24 1/3 innings for the Red Sox in 2021.
The Red Sox also announced on Tuesday that Chris Sale’s season is officially over after breaking his wrist. Tanner Houk is also going on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation.
