Final Score: Phillies 7, Reds 6
For much of Tuesday evening, the only hits that excited Philadelphia Phillies fans at Citizens Bank Park came 68 miles away, as Bryce Harper homered twice in his first rehab appearance with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
But after failing to record a hit in the first five innings, the Phillies exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, igniting their offense and leading them to their 68th win.
With Edmundo Sosa on third and Rhys Hoskins on first, Alec Bohm singled off of Reds starter Nick Lodolo in the home half of the sixth, cutting Cincinnati’s lead to 3-1:
A batter later, J.T. Realmuto tied the game with a two-run triple:
With Realmuto on third base, Reds skipper David Bell turned to Buck Farmer as he tried to keep the game tied. Instead, former Red Nick Castellanos gave the Phillies the lead with an RBI single:
After Michael Plassmeyer pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in his Major League debut, Matt Vierling broke out of an ice-cold stretch with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning:
That run looked like it may decide the game for a while, as José Alvarado allowed a run to score in the top of the eighth inning before striking out three consecutive batters to strand runners on second and third base.
Brad Hand came on to record the save in the ninth, but after a crucial error from Sosa, the Reds took the lead on a TJ Friedl triple that scored two:
Alexis DÃaz looked to close things out for the Reds in the bottom of the ninth, having been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disastrous season.
But after walking Jean Segura to begin the inning, the younger brother of New York Mets closer Edwin DÃaz allowed Bryson Stott to tie the game with a double. Segura scored with heads up baserunning, and Stott advanced to third base:
Two batters later, Nick Maton singled into right field to walk things off.
With the win, the Phillies improve to 68-55 on the season. Meanwhile, the Reds drop to an unsightly 48-73. Amazingly, the Reds don’t even have the worst record in the NL Central, as the Pittsburgh Pirates — set to come to Philadelphia this weekend — are 47-76.
The Phillies will give the ball to Cristopher Sánchez Wednesday evening as they continue their series against the Reds.

- Nick Lodolo didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, but ultimately recorded just one out in the sixth inning. After dominating the Phillies last Wednesday in Cincinnati, the 24-year-old gave up three hits and four earned runs this evening.
- Ranger Suárez was pretty effective through the first five innings Tuesday, but he lost his control in the sixth inning. The 26-year-old walked four — two of which brought home runs — and allowed three runs in six innings.
