Phillies remove interim tag, reward Rob Thomson with extension to be manager

Rob Thomson is no longer the interim manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s just the manager.

The Phillies announced Monday afternoon that the interim tag has been removed from Thomson’s title, and he’s been given a two-year extension through the 2024 season.

While it had seemed the Phillies may wait until after the season to make an official announcement on Thomson’s future, it would have been hard to imagine him not getting the gig on a full-time basis.

Thomson — the team’s bench coach since 2018 — was given the managerial job on an interim basis when the Phillies fired Joe Girardi on June 3. At that time, 2022 appeared to be on the verge of becoming a lost season for the Phillies, who were 22-29. However, Thomson guided the Phillies to a 65-46 record as interim manager (.586).

While Thomson has consistently refrained from giving himself credit for turning the season around, the Phillies reached the playoffs for the first time since 2011 under his watch, and their NLWCS upset of the St. Louis Cardinals marked the franchise’s first postseason series victory since the 2010 NLDS.

Expect Thomson to quickly divert all attention back to the 2022 NLDS, which starts on Tuesday and will see the Phillies take on the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves.
