Philadelphia Phillies’ catcher J.T. Realmuto finished seventh in National League MVP voting, it was announced Thursday.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt — who had previously finished runner-up for the award on two occasions — was voted the NL MVP:

Realmuto slashed .276/.342/.478 with 22 home runs, 84 RBIs, 21 stolen bases, an .820 OPS and a career-high 6.5 WAR, per FanGraphs. He had already won his third Silver Slugger and second Gold Glove Award for his excellent 2022 season.

In September, manager Rob Thomson said that he believed Realmuto was deserving of MVP consideration.

“Maybe that’s a little bias on my part because I see him every day and I know how important he is to our club,” Thomson said. “He’s had a great year: baserunning, offense, defense, running the pitching staff, running the bullpen, he’s just so valuable to us.”

This marks the second time that Realmuto has received down-ballot NL MVP votes, as he finished 14th in voting for the award in 2019, his first season with the Phillies.

Earlier this week, Thomson finished fifth in NL Manager of the Year Award voting and Aaron Nola finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting.
