Phillies to sign Trea Turner

The Phillies have their guy.

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Phillies have an agreement with shortstop Trea Turner. The deal is for 11 years and $300 million with a full no-trade clause for an average annual value at just over $27 million, per Kiley McDaniel.

Turner will reunite with former Nationals teammate Bryce Harper and hitting coach Kevin Long. In his walk year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Turner slashed .298/.343./466 with 21 home runs, 100 RBIs and 27 stolen bases.

He becomes the Phillies’ highest paid player on an average annual value basis, just ahead of Harper.

The deal will take him through his age 40 season. It’s stunning to think the Phillies have two players under contract through the early 2030s. Harper will be a free agent following the 2031 season while Turner will be a free agent after 2033.

With the Phillies two wins short of a World Series title in 2022, ownership and the front office made it clear that they will be aggressive in looking for upgrades. Now that the Phillies have their star shortstop, they have a bit more clarity on how much they have left to spend on pitching upgrades.

We’ll have more on this story as additional details become available.
