Mets reportedly interested in Andrew McCutchen

David Robertson may not be the only former Philadelphia Phillie that joins the New York Mets this offseason.

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Mets are interested in Andrew McCutchen as they look to add a fourth outfielder/DH type.

The Phillies declined a $15 million club option on McCutchen last winter, instead choosing to pay him a $3 million buyout. The former National League MVP ultimately landed a one-year/$8.5 million deal to join the Milwaukee Brewers. In his lone season with the Brewers, McCutchen slashed .237/.316/.384 with 17 home runs, 69 RBIs, 57 walks and a .700 OPS.

At this stage of his career, the five-time All-Star could do worse than being the fourth outfielder for a Mets team that won 101 games a season ago. Right fielder Starling Marte was limited to just 118 games in 2022, and center fielder Brandon Nimmo has a lengthy injury history of his own. If either were to get hurt, Buck Showalter could plug McCutchen into left field and rearrange an outfield that also includes Mark Canha accordingly.

If McCutchen were to sign with the Mets for the 2023 season, he would join the aforementioned Robertson and Darin Ruf as former Phillies currently on New York’s roster. Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler and Taijuan Walker — who will fill two spots in the starting rotation of the Phillies next season — are former Mets.
