The Philadelphia Phillies have signed RHP Jon Duplantier to a minor-league deal, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post. The deal includes an invite to big league Spring Training.
Duplantier was a third-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Rice University. He appeared in 19 games for the Snakes in the 2019 and 2021 seasons — seven of which were starts — posting a 6.70 ERA and 5.18 FIP.
Back in 2018, Duplantier was ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in the Diamondbacks organization by MLB Pipeline. At that time, he checked in above other Arizona prospects that have gone on to have success in the majors, including Jazz Chisholm and Daulton Varsho.
The 28-year-old spent the 2022 season in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, pitching for the Triple-A affiliates in Oklahoma City. Across 93 2/3 innings, Duplantier posted a 4.80 ERA, making 14 starts and appearing in 34 total games.
Presumably if Duplantier doesn’t make the Phillies out of Spring Training, he could serve as organizational depth at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
