The Philadelphia Phillies took a flier on an infielder with big-league experience Wednesday, seemingly inking Vimael MachÃn to a minor-league deal, which one would think will include an invite to Spring Training in the majors.
Melissa Lockhard of The Athletic was the first to report on the pact, with MachÃn seeming to confirm it via Twitter Thursday:
As Matt Winkleman notes, the Phillies actually selected MachÃn in the 2019 Rule-5 Draft, but ended up trading him to the Oakland Athletics, where he’s spent the past three seasons.
MachÃn saw his most extended big league action with the A’s this past season, slashing .220/.300/.287 with 13 RBIs and 25 walks in 73 games. While he’s primarily played third base, MachÃn can also play shortstop and second base, making him an interesting addition for the Phillies following last weekend’s trade of Nick Maton to the Detroit Tigers.
