Roman Quinn signs minor-league deal with AL contender

Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Roman Quinn has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Cleveland Guardians, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. The deal includes an invite to big league Spring Training.

Quinn was non-tendered by the Phillies last offseason, ultimately landing a minor-league deal with the Miami Marlins. But after he failed to make their Opening Day roster, Quinn returned to the Phillies organization. Quinn would play in 23 games for the Phillies in 2022, with his lightning-fast speed helping the Phillies to steal a victory on May 22 over the Los Angeles Dodgers:

The Phillies would designate Quinn for assignment as part of an early-June roster crunch, and before the season was out, he would also spend time in the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays organizations. Quinn was actually pretty productive at the plate in 21 games for the Rays, slashing .262/.340/.405 with a .745 OPS. Quinn wasn’t, however, on the ALWCS roster for the Rays when they were swept in two games by, ironically, the Guardians.

One of the fastest players in modern MLB history will now have a shot to make a Guardians team that won 92 games in 2022 out of Spring Training. While he’s just a .226 career hitter, larger bases and limits on how often a pitcher can throw over to first base coming in 2023 could make Quinn even more dangerous if he can find a way to get on base.
