Diamondbacks sign 2 former Phillies to minor league contracts

Former Philadelphia Phillies infielder/outfielder Yairo Muñoz and reliever Jeurys Familia have agreed to minor league deals with the Arizona Diamondbacks, which will include invites to big league Spring Training.

Muñoz, 28, slashed .211/.250/.404 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 57 at-bats for the Phillies in 2022. He saw the bulk of his limited time with the Phillies at second and third base, but also played sparingly in both corner outfield positions.

Meanwhile, Familia will look to revive his career with the Diamondbacks following a disappointing 2022 season. The former All-Star reliever inked a one-year/$6 million deal with the Phillies last offseason, but was designated for assignment in early August following 38 disastrous appearances for the club. The 33-year-old latched on with the Boston Red Sox late in the 2022 season, but his results didn’t improve. Six years after he led baseball in saves as a member of the New York Mets, Familia posted a 6.09 ERA in 48 combined appearances for the Phillies and Red Sox.

Elsewhere, the Snakes also invited former Phillies first-round pick Jesse Biddle to camp. The Germantown Friends High School graduate never appeared in a game for the Phillies, but is forever tied into the franchise’s history as he surrendered the first home run Bryce Harper hit as a Phillie while pitching for the Atlanta Braves in 2019:
