Rhys Hoskins to undergo ACL surgery on Opening Day

Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins will undergo reconstruction surgery on his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the club announced. The surgery will take place on March 30 in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Steve Singleton will perform the surgery.

Hoskins, 30, suffered the injury while trying to field a high chopper to first base during a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers on March 23. He was carted off the field. An MRI later revealed that Hoskins tore his left ACL.

It’s a huge blow for the Phillies, who will presumably be without their starting first baseman for all of 2023. There’s an outside chance that Hoskins could return late in the postseason if the Phillies make another run. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski estimated to reporters that the rehab process will take about seven months.

Darick Hall will get the majority of playing time at first base. He’ll be in the lineup against right handed starters, but it remains to be seen what the plan is against lefties. They could acquire a right-handed platoon partner for Hall within the next 48 hours. Or the Phillies could shift Alec Bohm to first base and start Edmundo Sosa at third against lefties.
