Bryson Stott, Phillies bats go silent in doubleheader Game 2 loss

Final Score: White Sox 3, Phillies 0

This afternoon — in Game 1 of their doubleheader on the South Side of Chicago — the Phillies plated seven runs on 14 hits in a win against the White Sox. That brought their run total over the last two games to 21. They also had 37 hits between those games.

So in normal baseball fashion, Philadelphia’s lineup fell silent — and hitless, through seven innings — in the night cap of the doubleheader against Lucas Giolito and company.

After finding themselves ahead three runs after the first inning of Game 1, Rob Thomson’s squad fell behind by three runs after the opening frame of Game 2.

Bailey Falter walked Luis Robert Jr. to lead off the bottom half of the first inning. Two batters later, Eloy Jimenez hit an infield single. That brought Jake Burger to the plate, and he proceeded to hit a three-run home run into the left field bleachers to put the home team up 3-0:

Falter settled in nicely after the first inning. In fact, after getting the first out in the second inning via a pickoff, the 25-year-old lefty retired 14 consecutive batters until he walked Burger to start the home half of the seventh.

Despite a rough first frame, Falter became the first Phillies starter to go seven innings in 2023. He allowed three runs on three hits, while walking three hitters and striking out three.

On the other side, Giolito tossed six no-hit innings with just one walk and seven strikeouts. The veteran right-hander was at 102 pitches after the sixth, so White Sox skipper Pedro Grifol opted to go with the bullpen for the remainder of the game.

Kendall Graveman was the first arm out of the pen for Chicago and pitched a hitless seventh inning. Left-hander Aaron Bummer came on in the eighth and allowed a double to the first batter he faced — Brandon Marsh:

With one out in the ninth, Bryson Stott — who was trying to extend his hitting streak to start the season to 18 games — stepped up to the plate against right-hander Reynaldo Lopez. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Stott flied out to the center field warning track, putting an end to his record-breaking streak to open the season.

The Phillies will be back at it tomorrow afternoon as they send Taijuan Walker to the mound looking for their second series victory of 2023.
