ARLINGTON — The Philadelphia Phillies were embarrassed in a 16-3 loss to the Texas Rangers Saturday, so there wasn’t a ton to smile about in the second game of the season.
However, in the top of the ninth inning, there was a bit of comedic relief.
Trea Turner crushed a ball off of reliever Taylor Hearn that looked off the bat like it could be his first home run as a Phillie. Ultimately, the ball pretty clearly went foul.
But in a game where C.B. Bucknor was trending on Twitter because he had at least a couple questionable calls go against the Phillies, Jeff Nelson, the crew chief, called for a review. Upon hearing that there was a review taking place, Turner looked about as shocked as Barry Bonds when he was intentionally walked with the bases loaded during a game in 1998.
And after the game Turner acknowledged the he was caught off guard by the review.
“I thought it was definitely foul,” Turner said in the visitor’s clubhouse at Globe Life Field. “Just where the ball hit and everything, I just didn’t think it was possible. But, appreciate them trying to steal one.”
Turner even jokingly blessed himself before looking to the sky, well aware that it would take a miracle for the call to be overturned.
“I was looking at [Jacob] deGrom and Brad Miller and some other guys and they were like ‘What are we doing?’ I said ‘I don’t know, but I’m praying for this homer.'”
Of course, Turner’s prayers weren’t answered and he would later fly out to center field to end the game. And for as tedious as it seemed in a 13-run game, with the influx of legalized gambling in recent years, MLB probably needs to be safer than sorry in these types of situations.
Turner has two triples in two games as a Phillie, but zero wins to show so far. He and the Phillies will need to regroup as they look to avoid being swept by the Rangers on Sunday Night Baseball.

- When asked if he was squeezed by Bucknor in his first start of the season, Zack Wheeler simply said the zone “felt like it was a little inconsistent.”
- Rob Thomson says there’s “lots of chirping going on” when an umpire misses calls like Bucknor did on Saturday. “I don’t know whether it helps or doesn’t, but, you know, guys get frustrated.”
- Seranthony DomÃnguez says he feels fine physically, but was understandably upset after allowing three hits and six runs — four of which were earned — while not recording an out in his season debut. “That was terrible. It wasn’t good. I don’t feel good with myself right now. Physically, OK, just terrible results today.”
