The Phillies announced the 2023 Wall of Fame inductees on Tuesday morning.

Scott Rolen, who played seven seasons with the Phillies and was recently elected to the Hall of Fame, is the most notable inductee.

The former Phillies third baseman is unable to attend alumni weekend on August 11-13 due to a scheduling conflict, so the Phillies plan on honoring Rolen on Friday, September 22 with a ceremony before a game against the Mets.

Ruly Carpenter, who was appointed team president in 1972, will be posthumously inducted along with former general manager John Quinn.

“In different but important ways, Scott Rolen, John Quinn and Ruly Carpenter all left an indelible mark of greatness on our organization, and we are proud to honor them,” Phillies managing partner John Middleton said in a statement. “Philadelphia is the place where Scott Rolen laid the foundation for a magnificent Hall of Fame career. It was a privilege to watch him play. We look forward to seeing him and his family on September 22.”

In seven seasons with the Phillies from 1996 to 2002, Rolen slashed .282/.373/.504 with 150 home runs and 559 RBIs. He won four Gold Gloves during his time with the Phillies and is widely considered one of the best defensive third baseman of all time.

“I am humbled and honored to join so many great Phillies on the team’s Wall of Fame,” Rolen said in a statement. “My years in Philadelphia, I wouldn’t trade for anything. It taught me how to play the game, how to hustle and play hard. I’m grateful to Philadelphia and the Phillies for the important role they played in my career.”

His inclusion on the Phillies WOF is polarizing. Frustrated with a lack of investment in the big league club, Rolen wanted out of Philadelphia and was subsequently traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2002. To the ire of fans, he publicly made it known how much he loved playing in St. Louis following his move out of Philadelphia.

There’s still a lot of anger among Phillies fans regarding Rolen’s departure 20 years ago. It’s hard to predict what kind of reception Rolen will get on September 22, but nevertheless, Rolen is statistically one of the best players to ever suit up in a Phillies uniform and he will be honored as such.
