Watch: Benches clear in Phillies-Diamondbacks game

Arizona Diamondbacks star rookie Corbin Carroll was hit twice through his first two plate appearances in Monday’s game. Starter Matt Strahm was trying to pitch him inside in both at-bats and ended up hitting him twice.

Thinking Strahm was trying to hit Carroll on purpose, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo emerged from the dugout to express his frustration at the home plate umpire, J.T. Realmuto and Rob Thomson. Benches cleared and as players from both teams gathered around home plate, Lovullo continued to yell at Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber.

It’s rare to see a big league manager escalate the situation, but that is what was happening here. Lovullo has the right to stand up for his star player, but there was no way Strahm was intentionally trying to hit Carroll. Pitchers also have the right to come inside.

Josh Rojas, who was not in the starting lineup, was ejected from the Diamondbacks dugout a play later.

The Phillies and Diamondbacks are tied at 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning.
