Johan Rojas is a game changer in center field.
He showed that in the first inning of Saturday’s doubleheader. With Ha-Seong Kim on first following a leadoff single, Fernando Tatis Jr. crushed a first-pitch fastball to deep left-center that carried to the out-of-town scoreboard.
Rojas leaped before hitting the wall, caught it, turned around and fired to first to get Kim out on a double play. The first baseman Drew Ellis made an excellent diving tag.
Before the first pitch, right fielder Nick Castellanos met Rojas in left-center and hugged the 22-year-old rookie. He hugged him again just a few minutes later after Rojas made the play.
According to Sports Info Solutions, Rojas leads all of minor league baseball with 16 defensive runs saved. No other minor league center fielder has more than four.
The Phillies and Padres are currently tied at 0-0 in the top of the second inning.
