Final Score (12 innings): Marlins 9, Phillies 8
This past weekend in Pittsburgh, the Phillies played some pretty sloppy baseball, resulting in a series loss to the Pirates. And with that, manager Rob Thomson addressed the whole team, which is something he rarely does.
But it was something the Phillies needed as they are right in the middle of the NL wild card race — meaning they’ll need to start playing their best baseball of the season, not their worst.
Whether or not that talk truly inspired the Phillies has yet to be seen, though. They won back-to-back close games against the Marlins on Monday and Tuesday, but blew more than one lead tonight in their extra-innings loss to the Fish.
The Phillies built up their first five-run lead in a little more than two weeks thanks to this two-run double by Alec Bohm in the sixth:
But the Phillies pitching staff slowly-but-surely allowed the Marlins back into the ballgame over the next few innings. Zack Wheeler, who seemingly cruised through the first five innings tonight, gave up back-to-back home runs in the sixth. The second coming off the bat of Jazz Chisholm Jr.:
Wheeler’s night was done after that inning and the Phillies bullpen would go on to to give up the club’s three-run lead. Jeff Hoffman gave up two runs in the eighth and Gregory Soto allowed a game-tying home run to Jorge Soler in the ninth:
The Phillies rebuilt their lead in the top of the tenth, though, on a Brandon Marsh pinch-hit, two-run home run off David Robertson:
But that lead wasn’t enough. With Craig Kimbrel on the mound, Miami plated two runs in their half of the 10th inning to tie the game. The Phillies took another lead in the 11th on an RBI single by Bohm. And with Dylan Covey on the mound, they were one strike away from winning the back-and-forth affair.
However, Trea Turner committed another defensive mistake that cost the Phillies a run, and the lead:
Philadelphia didn’t put a run on the board in the 12th and Covey would load the bases for Jesús Sánchez, who blooped a single into left field to walk things off for the Marlins:
