Final Score: Phillies 6, Angels 4
The Philadelphia Phillies (73-58) kept the good vibes rolling with a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in game one of a three-game interleague series at Citizens Bank Park.
With the win, the Phillies are now 6-1 on the homestand and a season-high 15-games over .500.
Trea Turner homered twice for the third time this season, Bryce Harper inched closer to 300 home runs and Brandon Marsh extended his career-long hitting streak to 10 games.
According to the team, Turner is the first Phillie to hit safely in 17 straight games at Citizens Bank Park in a single season since Plácido Polanco had a 19-game hitting streak at home from June 26-Sept. 20, 2011.
Phillies starter Taijuan Walker allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings pitched. His command wasn’t as sharp as he would have liked it to be, but he did strand eight Angels runners on base and limit the damage. It was enough for him to earn his 14th win of the season.
The Angels got off to an early lead thanks to an RBI single by Luis Rengifo. Mickey Moniak, who received more boos than cheers in his first plate appearance, reached on a bunt hit to set up bases loaded and two outs for another former Phillies top prospect.
Logan O’Hoppe was then robbed of a couple of runs when Turner ended the inning with a nice diving stop on a sharp ground ball.
After saving a couple runs in the prior half inning, Turner tied the game with a long solo home run on a hanging changeup from Lucas Giolito. The home run was his 400th career extra-base hit.
Los Angeles retook the lead in the fourth. Walker got the first two outs of the inning, but walked the No. 9 batter Randal Grichuk on four pitches and allowed a double to 2023 first-round pick Nolan Schanuel after falling behind 2-0.
With a base open and Ohtani up, Walker threw three pitches out of the zone before Rob Thomson put up four fingers to intentionally walk him.
It was a move Thomson had to make, but the cleanup hitter Brandon Drury came through with a base hit up the middle to drive in two.
The lead did not last long as Harper crushed a ball deep into the right center field seats to tie the game at 3-3. The line-drive shot was hit at 111.9 mph and was career home run No. 298.
In the fifth, Turner crushed another hanging pitch into the left field seats to give the Phillies a 5-3 lead. It was the 52nd Phillies home run in the month of August. Only three teams, the New York Yankees in May (53), the Tampa Bay Rays in April (61) and the Atlanta Braves in June (61) have hit more home runs in a single calendar month this season.
After striking out Ohtani to end the sixth, Strahm allowed his first earned run since Aug. 2 on an RBI single by Moniak. Jeff Hoffman was summoned from the bullpen to get the next two outs and he did just that. O’Hoppe flew out to right field and pinch hitter Hunter Renfroe grounded out to end the inning.
Craig Kimbrel earned his 21st save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
