This Sunday, Aug. 20, the Philadelphia Phillies will play in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, PA. at historic Bowman Field. It’s the second time the Phillies will take part in the game after doing so back in 2018 against the New York Mets. This year they’ll be playing against another NL East team, the Washington Nationals.
The Little League Classic started back in 2017 and is an event designed to get more young people interested and involved in the game of baseball. Players from both Major League teams will watch Little League World Series games in the stands and also meet with Little Leaguers throughout the day on Sunday prior to playing their game on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.”
One of the cooler things about this year’s event is that the Phillies won’t be the only local team represented in Williamsport. Last Friday, the Little League team from Media, PA. — located about 13 miles west of Philadelphia — defeated the team from Washington, D.C. in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Finals to punch their ticket to Williamsport.
After going undefeated in the Pennsylvania State tournament, outscoring their opponents 44-7, Media Little League went 3-0 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional tourney.
In the Regional Championship game, Media’s starting pitcher, Austin Crowley, pitched five innings while allowing just one hit and punching out 13 batters. On the offensive side, the team, managed by Tom Bradley, was held hitless through the regular six innings. The game went into extra-innings tied 0-0.
With Media up to bat in the bottom of the seventh and the game still scoreless, Trevor Skowronek stepped to the plate with two outs and a runner on. Media was still hitless at this point, but with two strikes, Skowronek delivered with the swing of his life — sending his team to the Little League World Series:
Since Media is a local Delco team, it’s only natural that some of their players are Phillies fans. They also have a few players whose favorite athletes are Phillies, such as Bryson Stott and Bryce Harper. So on Sunday, the kids from Media will be able to meet and watch their favorite players perform at Bowman Field — a pretty cool moment for any 12-year-old ball player.
Media’s quest to win the Little League World Series begins on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. EST on ESPN when they take on the team from Needville, Texas, who is representing the Southwest Region.
