Phillies Therapy: Why Phillies pitching is well prepared for 2023 postseason

Cristopher Sánchez is having an impressive season. (Don Otto)

Let’s get ahead of ourselves for a little bit. The Phillies, who are 11 games over .500, hold the top spot in the NL wild card race.

The goal is to secure that spot and the Phillies are on pace to do so. With many of the teams below them struggling mightily, the Phillies could spend most of September thinking about October.

There are some questions that need to be answered before then. When José Alvarado comes back from the injured list, what will happen to the six-man rotation? How will the Phillies manage Michael Lorenzen and Cristopher Sánchez, who are both over career highs in innings pitched? Are there any surprise names who could contribute to the Phillies in September?

On this week’s episode of “Phillies Therapy,” Paul Boye and Matt Gelb dive deep into the pitching situation. Gelb argues that the Phillies, from a pitching standpoint, are more prepared for a long playoff run in 2023 than they were in 2022.
