Game 162 has a different meaning for every team, and player, in Major League Baseball. For some clubs, it means everything as they continue to fight for a spot in the playoffs. For other teams, it doesn’t mean as much since they’ve already been eliminated from playoff contention or already secured a postseason berth.
When it comes to players, some are ready for their season to end as they were unable to meet certain expectations. Others, though, enter Game 162 trying to reach certain benchmarks or looking to end their season on the right foot heading into the playoffs.
Game 162 didn’t mean anything for the Phillies today as they secured the top Wild Card spot in the NL days ago. They put together a lineup consisting of some every day players along with a few bench guys. They had Matt Strahm open the game on the mound while giving Nick Nelson the job of bulk pitcher.
Strahm delivered a 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts. Nelson was equally as good, delivering 5 1/3 innings of two-hit, one-run ball.
Offensively, there was one particular player who stuck out when it came possibly reaching certain benchmarks this afternoon. Alec Bohm, who was considered a breakout candidate back in spring training, was five RBIs shy of 100 for the year and one home run short of 20.
While the RBI milestone seemed a bit out of reach, hitting just one more home run seemed reasonable. And it was. Bohm drove in a pair of runs, one of which came on his 20th home run on the year in the sixth inning.
Bohm became the sixth player to reach the 20 home run total this season for the Phillies, joining Kyle Schwarber (47), Nick Castellaons (29), Trea Turner (26), Bryce Harper (21) and J.T. Realmuto (20). It’s the first time in franchise history the Phillies have had six players hit 20-plus homers in the same season.
Bohm, 2-for-4, wasn’t the only daycare member to finish his season on a high note. Bryson Stott, owner of a .500 OPS in September, went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a double and a walk today, while Brandon Marsh went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and four RBIs overall.
The Phillies victory this afternoon was their 90th of the year, marking the first time they’ve accomplished a 90-plus-win season since 2011.
Philadelphia will be off tomorrow and have a light workout at Citizens Bank Park before starting their postseason on Tuesday.
