Former Phillies manager Gabe Kapler interviews for Red Sox top front office job

Former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler interviewed with the Boston Red Sox for their president of baseball operations job, according to Alex Spier of The Boston Globe. It’s not immediately clear how serious of a candidate Kapler is for the position.

Boston dismissed Chaim Bloom back in September, as they struggled through a 78-84 season that ultimately netted them a last-place finish in the crowded AL East.

Meanwhile, Kapler was fired by the San Francisco Giants as their manager just prior to the final series of the regular season. The Giants finished the season at 79-83, going an unsightly 30-42 after the All-Star Break. Similar second-half collapses plagued Kapler during his two seasons as Phillies manager in 2018 and 2019.

At one point, Kapler did seem on the trajectory to be a president of baseball operations or general manager. But when the Phillies hired him as their manager in October of 2017, he left his job as the director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’s since worked six seasons as an MLB skipper, winning NL Manager of the Year in 2021, when the Giants set a new franchise record with 107 regular season wins.

Of course, Kapler has quite a few ties to the Red Sox organization. Kapler had two stints as an outfielder in Boston, homering 13 times, driving in 77 runs and posting a .713 OPS over parts of four seasons. Most notably, he was part of the 2004 Red Sox, who won the franchise’s first World Series title since 1918. Kapler even managed the Single-A Greenville Drive for the Red Sox in 2007, before returning to playing in the majors from 2008-2010.

Current Phillies general manager Sam Fuld — who works under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski — reportedly declined to interview for the top Red Sox front office position.
