Phillies news and rumors 1/27: Details on Rhys Hoskins’ deal with Brewers, Giants and Cubs interest

The Milwaukee Brewers made the Rhys Hoskins signing official on Friday afternoon. It’s a two-year deal with an opt out after 2024 and a mutual option for 2026.

According to the Associated Press, Hoskins will earn $12 million in 2024. Hoskins also earns an additional $4 million as part of a buyout if he opts out of his deal after this season.

If he opts in, Hoskins will earn $18 million with the Brewers in 2025. Hoskins could spend a third year in Milwaukee if he and the Brewers opt in to an $18 million mutual option for 2026. If he opts into a second year, but at least one side rejects the mutual option for a third year, Hoskins gets a $4 million buyout.

Overall, the deal could be worth up to $48 million over three years. Mutual options are rarely picked up, so Hoskins’ deal will likely be for one or two years.

If Hoskins stays healthy and posts strong numbers in his first year back from ACL surgery, he will likely opt out of his contract after the 2024 season.

Other teams had interest in Hoskins.

Hoskins’ hometown team, the San Francisco Giants, made a “minor run” at him, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The Giants made an offer that was reportedly “not close” to Milwaukee’s.

The Chicago Cubs’ interest in Hoskins waned when the team acquired Michael Busch from the Dodgers, according to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. The Cubs are looking to give Busch a chance to take over at first base and as Sharma noted, Hoskins likely did not have interest in signing to be a designated hitter. Hoskins was linked to the Cubs virtually all offseason.

With a new team comes a new number for Hoskins. He will switch from No. 17 to 12. No. 17 in Milwaukee is associated with Jim Gantner and is essentially frozen the way 6, 11 and 26 are for the Phillies. Hoskins wore No. 12 as a minor leaguer.
